LBGTQIA+ Issues
If you live outside the social majority there’s an extra layer of stress, nuance and complexity added to your life. Though not all of your difficulties are impacted by racism, classism, bigotry and hate, these negative social impacts are added on top of other things you are experiencing.
Negative social stressors that impact the LGBTQIA+ community are similar to those impacting people from other marginalized communities. Talking with a therapist allows you to see how you fit into the overlying social system and how that is impacting your mental health. Together, we explore the ways that your needs are not being met, we discover thought patterns and habits that don’t serve you and we create ways to move toward a more peaceful, fulfilled future.
How LGBTQIA+ counseling helps:
- Explore sexuality and gender
- Learn how to express yourself
- Develop coping skills for adversity
- Identify sources of trauma and discrimination
- Identify trauma or PTSD
Sometimes you just need a safe, non judgemental space where you can express and explore yourself. We work together to understand motivations for desire, feelings of loneliness or of being an outlier and insecurities about identity. Through therapy sessions, we can identify things that are uniquely impacting you as a LBGTQIA+ individual and create coping skills to build a healthy life.
Signs you could benefit from LGBTQIA+ counseling
- Feelings of loneliness and desperation
- Experiencing discrimination or bullying
- Anxiety or depression
- Uncontrollable anger
- Desire to explore gender or sexuality
There are different stressors that impact members of the LGBTQIA+ community and the lived experience can be different from that of other individuals. As someone who is part of communities of color, I understand some of those stressors on a personal level. As a therapist, I can see how your presence in our current society impacts your mental health and provides ways for coping.
